10 Movies Similar to Passengers

Pictures about astronauts and intergalactic travel in recent years have become more spectacular and more naturalistic, and “Passengers” was no exception.

A fantasy thriller about Jim and Aurora heading for a colony planet, not only showcases the incredible beauty of outer space, but also focuses on the complex relationships of the main characters. If you want to see more similar projects, then check out the list of films similar to Passengers.

Gravity (2013)

Ryan Stone is a female engineer on her first space mission. The second astronaut on the ship is Matt Kowalski, who plans to end his career with this flight. An accident occurs, the shuttle is destroyed, and now the characters remain in outer space, being in conjunction with each other and aimlessly moving in orbit through the dark, endless space.

The drama is similar to Passengers in many ways. The main similarity is that we are talking about two characters, and the viewer sees no one but them in the frame for almost the entire film. The action similarly unfolds in space and the breakdown of the ship becomes the catalyst for the plot.

Pandorum (2009)

Two astronauts – Lieutenant Payton and Corporal Nolan Bauer – are passengers of a huge starship. By chance, they come out of suspended animation, not remembering what their mission will be. They also do not understand how long they flew, what happened to the other members of the team and where they are. The characters soon notice that there are dangerous creatures on the ship.

In the first place, the film is similar to 2016’s Passengers in that key characters are accidentally awakened from artificial sleep. They also similarly face the breakdown of a starship, and are forced to fight to save not only their lives, but also someone else’s.

Orbit 9 (2017)

Helena has been in space since birth. She is flying on a space ship all alone, and for another twenty years she will be forced to continue flying. In her entire life, the girl has not seen a single person live, but one day Alex is on board, who has to do some repairs. Subsequently, Helena is waiting for a stunning discovery.

Similar to Passengers is that the plot focuses on a couple who met on a spaceship. The goal of the heroine, like that of Jim and Aurora, is to make a long-term journey in order to take part in the colonization of the planet.

Fans of films like Passengers (2016) will find many similarities: one of the characters’ goals is to colonize an unknown planet, they encounter ship malfunctions and at some point enter into a major conflict.

Cargo (2009)

2267 year. It is impossible to live on Earth because of a global catastrophe, and those who managed to escape now live on space stations. Dr. Laura hopes to one day get to the planet Rhea, but this requires money. To achieve her goal, she signs a contract to work on an old cargo ship that will fly to station N42 and return back in a few years. Suddenly, Laura begins to guess the true purpose of the ship.

In both films, the situation unfolds similarly: the characters seek to settle on another planet, some of them are in a state of artificial sleep, a disaster occurs on the ship, and the main storyline focuses on two characters. However, there are more actors in “Gruz”, as well as elements of a thriller.

Near future. Astronaut Sam’s three-year contract is coming to an end, and he will soon leave his solo watch at the lunar complex. His only interlocutor all this time was only the artificial intelligence GERTY. Periodically, Sam looks through the records coming from Earth from his wife and daughter. Shortly before the end of the mission, he gets into an accident, and, having come to his senses, he realizes that he lived in deception.

The film is similar to Passengers in terms of setting and limited number of characters. The theme of the loneliness of a person who is forced not to see other people for a long time is also raised.

Both stories feature heroes who are forced to adjust to an existence off-Earth alone. At the same time, they have to face a huge mortal danger.

Once on board, he realizes that it seems that some kind of tragedy has occurred here: several crew members have committed suicide, and the remaining scientists are behaving very suspiciously.

Fans of films like “Passengers” in 2016, for sure, will be interested in a free adaptation of a famous work. Here, the plot similarly focuses on the people who live on the station, and emphasizes an unusual love story.

Lost in Space (1998)

2058 year. Obviously, humanity will not be able to stay on Earth for more than two decades. Scientist Robinson is sent with his family to the planet Alpha Prime, which is habitable. The hero plans to build a gate through which humanity will be evacuated. But the extremists manage to send a man on board, whose task is to destroy the spaceship and the Robinsons.

As in “Passengers”, it tells about the events that took place in space. For some time, the heroes are in artificial sleep, but awaken due to unforeseen circumstances. They also have to fight for their lives.

Rounding out the list of films similar to Passengers is a horror film whose plot, while not focusing on a love line, has many other similarities. Both films tell about heroes who face mortal risk in space.
