In 2006 British writer Simon Beckett released his first detective novel Chemistry of Death, which grew into a series of works with great critical acclaim and the love of readers around the world. At the center of the plot is a man named David Hunter. He serves as a medical examiner in London and is renowned as an excellent specialist in his field. The hero has a wife and daughter, but they tragically die in a car accident. This event becomes a cruel blow to the man, so he decides to quit his job and the capital, changing his place of residence to a small village in the English countryside.
Three years pass after the tragic death of David’s relatives. He manages to find some peace of mind, but suddenly, in the woods near his new place of residence, two teenagers find the body of a woman. This comes as a surprise to the locals, because crimes in these places have always been limited to drunken scuffles at most. The police can’t find any leads, but suspicion falls on David, because he’s the only outsider. The locals begin to skewer the hero, so he has to offer the police his help, so that he can find the killer to justify himself.
