Russian love for everything connected with France, as you know, has deep historical roots. And even though we don’t read French novels en masse today and don’t hang portraits of Alain Delon on the walls, we do have serial films! We present a selection of the best French series of recent years, from costume historical dramas to crime thrillers.

Lupine (2021)

Of all the new French series this year, the captivating story of Senegalese immigrant Assane Diop has already made the list of the best. More than 20 years ago, Assan’s father, who worked as a driver for an influential Parisian family, was wrongly accused of theft. Now Assan is ready to take revenge on the offenders and commit a real robbery in the spirit of his favorite book hero, Arsene Lupin, an elusive gentleman robber with a keen sense of justice.

Forest (2017)

The unique French comedy series consists of a chain of short two-minute episodes linked together. Each episode is a first-person narrative that begins with the words “Long story short, I…”. In the life of the protagonist, some quite ordinary everyday event occurs, and he briefly outlines his attitude, understanding, and draws conclusions. No abstract reasoning and no water at all – everything is clear and to the point. And incredibly funny at the same time.
