The story in the show unfolds in the middle of New York City in Manhattan in an upscale mansion. It is inhabited by three strangers – a young girl Mabel, Charles Savage, an elderly actor, and an equally elderly Oliver Putnam, a once-popular Broadway director forced to relive painful memories of past success. Each of the characters is lonely and spends his time watching numerous real-life crime series.

When a murder occurs in their own home, the heroes get a great chance to apply in life the detective techniques repeatedly seen in the series.
